How Our Pricing Works

If you’re looking into heat pump installation, insulation upgrades, or ductwork improvements for your Boise home, one of your first questions is likely “What will it cost?”

That’s a completely fair question. These are significant investments, and you deserve a straight answer. This page is our best attempt at one. We don’t give online or over-the-phone quotes (and you should be suspicious of anyone that does). But below we’ll explain:

  • The main factors that affect our pricing
  • How to compare quotes from different contractors
  • Examples of project specifics at different price levels
  • Why it’s so important for us to see your home before giving you a quote

What Goes Into River City’s Pricing

Every project is different, but these are the variables that move the number most:

01

Our process

Most contractors show up, look at your existing equipment, and write you a quote. At River City, we test first. Think of it like going to a doctor: you’d be alarmed if a physician prescribed expensive surgery before running a single test. We feel the same way about your home.

Before we recommend anything, we measure, we test, and we design for your specific home. Our process is extensive, and very different from the visual inspections other contractors rely on. It’s also why our solutions actually work.

02

Your home’s condition

Insulation levels, air leakage, duct condition, and your electrical panel all affect project scope. Older homes typically require more work before new equipment can perform the way it should.

03

Scope of work

Simple equipment swaps are one job. Solving your problems at their root, which often means addressing the ductwork, insulation, or both, is a different and larger one. Comprehensive upgrades will increase your cost, but they are real, long-lasting solutions, not band-aid fixes.

04

Equipment type and capacity

Brand, system size, and efficiency all affect cost. Correct sizing matters more than most people realize: an oversized system can be the cause of the problem, not the solution.

Comparing Different Contractor Quotes

When you’re comparing quotes, low-bid contractors are counting on one thing: that you assume all HVAC quotes are basically the same. They’re not. A quick quote with few details isn’t a bargain version of what River City does. It’s a different service entirely, one that skips the diagnosis, the load calculations, the ductwork evaluation, and the post-install verification. The price is lower because the scope of work and quality of work performed is fundamentally different.

River City HVACLowest bid
DiagnosisWe measure airflow, duct pressure, insulation levels, and air leakage before recommending anything.A visual look at the existing equipment. Maybe a tape measure.
Equipment sizingA Manual J load calculation based on your specific home, so the system is sized for what your home actually needs.Whatever matches the old system (which was often wrong to begin with).
Scope of workEverything needed to actually solve the problem, including ductwork or insulation if that’s what’s driving the issue. The equipment swap. Anything else becomes a “discovery” once the job is underway.
The quoteA range tied to what we’ve actually found in your home, with a written scope before any work begins.A low headline number designed to win the call, with line items that grow once work begins.
3D home modelWe use the Amply app to build a 3D model of your home, so you can see exactly what’s being proposed before you commit. You sign off on a written quote with no clear idea of what the final result will look like.
After the workWe test again to verify the system performs the way it was designed to. You get before-and-after numbers you keep. The truck leaves when the new equipment turns on.
If something’s wrongWe document the work and we stand behind it. Call us.A service call, often at full rates.

Another thing to consider: Choosing the lowest bid doesn’t even guarantee that you’ll spend less. Instead, it frequently means you spend twice: once for the low-bid job, and again (and again) when problems inevitably surface down the road.

Examples of Heat Pump, Ductwork, and Insulation Projects at Different Price Levels

Newly installed air source heat pump

Heat Pump Installation

Lower cost project: A single ductless mini-split to solve a comfort problem in one room, like a garage, an addition, or a bedroom that never gets warm.

Higher cost project: A full electrification retrofit for a whole home, including new ductwork, a panel upgrade, and envelope improvements to support efficient heat pump performance.

Included at every level: Manual J load calculations to size the system correctly, commissioning at startup, and follow-up testing to verify the system performs the way it was designed to.

Worker sealing duct connections

Ductwork Repair and Replacement

Lower cost project: Sealing accessible duct joints to reduce leakage and improve efficiency.

Higher cost project: Redesigning portions of an undersized or poorly routed system to deliver airflow to the rooms that need it.

Included at every level: Pre- and post-test duct leakage measurements, documented changes, and verified airflow at every register in every room.

Blown Cellulose Insulation Being Applied To New Construction House

Insulation and Air Sealing

Lower cost project: Targeted air sealing in an attic, or adding insulation to a single area with clear heat loss.

Higher cost project: A comprehensive envelope upgrade covering attics, rim joists, basements, and crawl spaces, often including removal of failed existing insulation before new material goes in.

Included at every level: Blower door testing before and after to document exact air leakage reductions, documented R-values, and verification the work was done to the standard we promised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you need to see my home before giving me a price?

Even on the initial phone call, we’re ready to talk through what you’re experiencing and what a good outcome looks like. From there, we want to see your home in person because the diagnostic work we do before recommending anything is the whole foundation of what makes our solutions work. That’s what lets us give you a real scope and a real price, not a guess designed to win the call.

Why has another contractor quoted me significantly less?

Ask them what’s included. Ask whether they’ve done a load calculation, tested duct leakage, or plan to verify airflow after installation. The price difference is almost always explained by what’s been left out, work that either won’t get done or will appear as a change order once the job is underway.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We work with several financing partners and can walk you through your options once we know what the project looks like.

Are rebates and incentives included in your price ranges?

The ranges above are before incentives, like Idaho Power rebates. We help every homeowner navigate what’s available and handle the paperwork, and you’ll understand upfront how much of a discount you’ll qualify for.
